Life member Alex Burns celebrates his 80th birthday
12 November 2008
Last night the band celebrated the 80th birthday of life member Alex Burns.
Alex has played bagpipes for the Hills District Pipe Band for more than 1/3 of his life and was there in the early days when the band was formed.
Alex remains a member of the band and while you may not see him playing at events thoughout the year, there is still no better a man to introduce a room of hungry Scotsmen to their haggis each year at the band's annual ball. Rumor has it that many years ago Alex was the man who first introduced the haggis to the Annual Ball. All these years on and it is still because of him that we have haggis and in plenty supply.
I have always believed that the importance of a person is shown in how loud people sing Happy Birthday, and last night was one of the loudest version I have heard. On behalf of the band, I would like to wish you a very Happy Birthday Alex.
