Hills District Pipe Band featured in Madison

Rolfe ChrystalHills District Pipe Band showcased in the July edition Madison Magazine this year at the Bundanoon is Brigadoon Highland Games. The band featured on a double page spread with its illustrious Drum Major Neil Reid getting a page all to himself.

The Hills District Pipe Band has always been considered be 'fashion-forward'. In a time sitting on the edge of rememberance, the band wore neon clothing under a black light, marching around in the dark. This feature in Madison magazine is just another example of the cutting edge style the band brings to modern day piping.

The Hills District Pipe Band is unique in the sense that its pipers share a different tartan to its drummers. The pipers wear a MacDonald of Clanranald tartan which is mostly green in colour while the dark blue Regimental Argyle and Sutherland Highlander tartan is worn by the drummers. Initially, the piper’s tartan was thought to be very distinctive making a clear break with the uniform of the Toongabbie Band and with that of any other band around at the time. The different tartans have been kept from those early days and you can still see the pipers and drummers wearing seperate tartans today.

More information on the history of the band can be found at our history section.
