Major General Gordon Maitland Patron's Award
Major General Gordon Maitland, AO, OBE, RFD, ED (Ret'd) Patron to the Hills District Pipe Band The following short biographical note is taken from Major General Maitland's series 'The Battle History of the Royal New South Wales Regiment'.
During World War II, at the age of seventeen, Maitland first encountered the regiment when he enlisted in the 2nd AIF. He rose through the ranks, serving in three of the regiment's battalions - the last as its commanding officer. Upon retirement as a Major General, he was appointed Regimental Colonel of the regiment, since which time he has written extensively about the regiment and its history.
Major General Maitland was approached in 2007 to be the patron of the band and at his suggestion the Patron's award was introduced.The award exists to reward the efforts of those who work hard to become better band members. It will also give any younger members something to strive towards.
The award committee using the criteria agreed with Major General Gordon Maitland select each year a suitable recipient. The award is presented at the Annual Ball held by the Hills District Pipe Band.
The Criteria for the Patrons Award;
- Good attendance at practice and performances
- High standard of dress and conduct
- Shows a desire to help other band members and takes responsibility when needed
- Has a positive attitude towards the band and members
- Works consistently toward achieving higher standards of playing
- Shows initiative in learning by practicing over and above what is expected
